It takes its name from Cerignola, a town in Puglia. There are various theories about its origin. One of these is that it originates from the Roman “orchites” olives, which the Roman troops used to carry with them on their long journeys. Having gone to Puglia and throwing the stones to the ground at the end of a banquet, the cultivation of Cerignola came to life.
